Not enough gets said about the tremendous people in our little community. The world of Rails developers is populated with people willing to put their art ahead of the groupthink of the marketplace — people with unique sensibilities and — sometimes — questionable facial hair.
We all love Ruby, our elegant little language, created by the unassuming but brilliant Matz — even if we flirt a little with Erlang and Haskell. We have the psychedelic genius of _why and his many creations. I have watched Ezra Zygmuntowicz as he went from a friend on IRC who helped me through the sticky parts of learning Rails to the co-founder of the recently-VC-funded EngineYard — the ultimate Rails hosting company — even while creating Cells and Merb (a better Rails than Rails, IMHO) and backing Rubinius along the way.
I stand in awe of these men and the many others like them who stand among us.
So, if Rails is a Ghetto, as another good friend, Zed Shaw, has so entertainingly ranted, I say, save a burned out crack house mattress in the corner for me. I’m in. As long as men like that are behind our community, great things will keep happening.
I will be at acts_as_conference in Orlando this Saturday — my first chance since speaking at the first Rails conference to enjoy the company of a large group of fellow Rails developers. Hope to see you there.
